Sand, surf and sunsets

We’re a couple of days back from our annual fall Rosemary Beach trip with Jon’s side of the family, and miraculously, the laundry is done and the suitcases unpacked.

The drive to Rosemary is always long and even longer coming home, but the time there never fails to delight. This year, Lina seemed to remember the house and the beach and fell immediately into her favorite beach pastime of digging in the sand with gusto. We saw a lot of new confidence in Corin this year, as he charged into sizable surf without fear and logged some pretty impressive bodyboard runs. The waves robbed him of his prized goggles late on our last day, which a thorough search did not discover. Some other lucky kid is probably getting good use of them as I write, though I prefer to imagine them as entertainment for the dolphins.

These days, I find myself deeply valuing any opportunity to unplug, read a good book and spend time with people I love. Add sand, surf and sunsets, and no question, my soul benefited. Of course, we couldn’t ignore our concern for northern California as it burned or so many other places where people are suffering. There are endless, giant worries in the world, and it can begin to feel like I carry them all with me every day. I am learning to leave them with God and let Him show me what my responsibilities are. And for a brief few days, I am so grateful we were able to lay aside our stresses and just be together in a truly lovely place. The memories will last a lifetime.

Come flu or…whatever

I had really been missing my best friend, which is why I decided a few weeks back that I was going to brave the drive to Tampa, Florida alone with my two children over spring break. We hit the road the morning after Corin’s birthday party and left daddy behind to bring home the bacon.

The kids did great. Seriously, they are champion travelers.

This trip, however, had some other unexpected elements. It turned out Lila’s family was being felled by the flu just as we arrived. I brought the virus home with me, which then bestowed the lingering gift of a massive sinus infection. Corin and Lina seem to have escaped the worst of it. I don’t know how that happened, but I am very thankful.

So, not quite the trip we imagined, but we did get some time with friends we love, and the kids and I had a great time exploring parks and museums. We even all got a few hours at the beach on Friday. As I walked along the beach with Lila, pushing a tired Lina in the stroller, we talked about the ups and downs of life and how we would remember the trip when we dragged our flu-ridden bodies along the shore. That’s the thing about a friendship like this: it spans the full range. It won’t be the last time we shake our heads and wait to laugh at the memories.

I hope you’re lucky enough, as I am, to have friends who are worth the germs.

Friends in (latitudinally) low places

And now for a post that’s truly overdue…

At the end of January, I took a trip with the kids to Florida to see a very dear friend and her family. We discovered that two adults to five children is not really any easier than one adult to two or three, but we tackled outings with gusto and balanced it out with some quiet time at home. I was a tad apprehensive about flying alone with two kids for the first time, but thankfully, both my kids travel well. We did not make enemies of our fellow passengers. The kids and I got sick half-way through our visit, which added an extra level of challenge. Baby Girl did not appreciate being in an unfamiliar environment while feeling markedly subpar. I know this, because she would not let me set her down for a moment without subjecting the neighborhood to ear-splitting wails. Thus, my pictures of the trip are a little sparse. (If you’ve ever tried shooting photos while holding an unhappy baby, you know what I mean.)

Whatever the challenges, it is always worth it to reconnect with friends. Our kids are growing up fast, and Corin and Eleanor – just a few weeks apart in age – played together beautifully. Corin happily would have stayed behind at Aunt Lila’s house. These times make me wish I could collect in one place all my friends and family spread out across the globe, so we could be a part of each other’s lives in ways so hard to accomplish long-distance. Here’s to loved ones in far-away places; we miss you all.

Lina was sleeping. Also, I am clearly not a professional photographer. Getting four kids to all look at the camera and smile at the same time is an accomplishment well beyond my skills. Actually, it’s just my kid who won’t look at the camera and smile.
